Loyalty points without cards: the version that actually works

Updated 2026-07-24 · 4 min read

In our article on client loyalty we were hard on stamp cards, and rightly so. But the criticism needs a precision, because it isn't aimed at *rewarding repeat visits* — that works — it's aimed at the cardboard. The physical stamp card fails for three very specific reasons, and all three are fixable.

Why the cardboard failed

1. It got lost. It lived at the bottom of a handbag, stayed at home on the day of the appointment, got wet, got thrown out with the receipt. A reward that depends on the client bringing a bit of card is a reward almost nobody claims.

2. It rewarded too late. «Tenth one free» hands out the prize exactly when the battle is already won, and ignores the moment people are genuinely lost: between the first and the second visit. Rewarding visit 10 doesn't prevent the desertion at visit 2.

3. It depended on the salon's memory. Somebody had to remember to stamp it, find the stamp, not stamp it twice by mistake. A small friction repeated 300 times a month is a large friction.

None of the three is a problem with the *idea* of rewarding loyalty. They're problems with the paper. Swap it for a digital scheme that lives where your client already is — her WhatsApp — and all three disappear.

Stamps or points: pick the model

There are two ways of adding up, and the right one depends on your service list.

If in doubt, start with stamps. You can always move to points once the mechanics are running smoothly.

How many visits and which reward (without eating your margin)

This is where most people get it wrong, in both directions.

How ClaudIA does it (without you keeping count)

ClaudIA's loyalty scheme takes those three fixes and automates them:

You redeem the reward yourself, at the visit, with full control: ClaudIA informs, but you give the gift. And all of it on your usual number.

Real loyalty is still built with memory and good treatment — a points scheme is no substitute for being greeted by name. But as a layer that rewards consistency and gives an excuse to come back, the digital version over WhatsApp does what cardboard never could: always be to hand, reward on time, and not depend on anybody remembering.
